The ice on the Assiniboine River between Portage la Prairie and the Shellmouth Dam may weaken or crack after flows are being reduced at the Shellmouth Reservoir.

Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre put out the announcement late Wednesday.

Ahead of the spring runoff, the reservoir saw its flow released, to ensure it could increase its capacity. Now that the target level has been reached, they are reducing the outflow to 100 cfs from 1,035 cfs (cubic feet per second) as of today.

This change could make the ice hazardous and the ice could break. Once again, it is strongly advised you watch for potential weak ice conditions on rivers and lakes all over the province as temperatures rise this week.
