The Virden Oil Kings eliminated the Killarney Shamrocks and the Minnedosa Bombers and Cartwright Clippers are going the distance in the Tiger Hills Hockey League playoffs. Tanner Hepp scored 11:48 into overtime to lift Virden past Killarney 5-4 at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. Landon Peel, Riley Shamray, James Sytnyk and Cam Whyte also scored for the Oil Kings who took the best-of-five West Division semifinal three games to one. Issac Friesen scored twice for the Shamrocks including the tying goal at 5:56 of the third period. Morgan Magwood and Reid Gow had the other Killarney goals. Virden will meet the Boissevain Border Kings in the division final. Shane Jury scored twice as Minnedosa doubled up on Cartwright 4-2. Kelly Stinson and Ryan Heino also found the back of the net for the hometown Bombers who evened that East Division semifinal at two games a piece. Jory Mullin had both goals for the Clippers. The deciding fifth game goes today (4 p.m.) in Cartwright. The winner will face the Gladstone Lakers in the division final.

 

The Southwest Cougars were blanked 4-0 by the Brandon Wheat Kings Saturday night in Souris. Ethan Guthrie scored a pair of third period goals for the Wheat Kings who lead the best-of-five Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League quarterfinal two games to none. Brandon’s Mason Lobreau made 27 saves in recording the shutout. Cougars netminder Owen LaRocque faced 35 shots. The Wheat Kings host game three on Friday.

 

In the Westman High School Hockey League - Chance Traverse had two goals and an assist as the Vincent Massey Vikings downed Boissevain/Souris 6-2. Zach Edmunds had both goals for the Broncos; Kristin Moshenko made 22 saves as Swan Valley shutout Deloraine/Hartney 9-0; Bobby Orr-Roulette scored twice and Keecan Beaulieu made 26 saves as the Sandy Bay Badgers blanked Hamiota/Rivers/Elton/Strathclair 5-0; Seth Falkevitch had a hat trick in Major Pratt’s 5-4 victory overCrocus Plains; Ozy Atkinson and Keagan Gaywish had two goals each as Minnedosa/Erickson outscored Grand Plains 9-6 and Ryan Benson had three goals and an assist as McCreary/Ste. Rose beat Birtle/Shoal Lake/Rossburn 4-1.

 

The Brandon Wheat Kings and Winnipeg Ice both lost Saturday. Brandon gave up three unanswered third period goals and fell 7-6 to the Warriors in Moose Jaw. Ridly Greig and Chad Nychuk had two goals each for the Wheat Kings. Dominion City’s Denton Mateychuk assisted on Brayden Yager’s game winning power play goal with 37 seconds left in regulation. Winnipeg dropped a 3-2 decision to Prince Albert. Nolan Allen scored 1:51 into overtime for the Raiders. Jack Finley and Mikey Milne replied for the Ice.

 

Austin Poganski, Jeff Malott and Johnathan Kovacevic each had a goal and an assist as the Manitoba Moose downed the Rockford IceHogs 5-3. Mikhail Berdin made 25 saves in net for the Moose.

 

Elias Humanicki of Gimli and Shaela Hayward of Carman won the Provincial High School Curling Championships in Hamiota. Humanicki downed Jace Freeman of Virden 6-2 in the boys “A-B” final. Hayward defeated Bailey Mangin of Swan Valley 7-3 in the girls “B” side final and went undefeated.

 

Avery Friesen & Luke Trinke of Garden Valley Collegiate captured the Provincial High School Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in Swan Lake. Friesen & Trinke outscored Colin Desaulnier & Lauren Evason of Gabrielle Roy 9-7 in an extra end in the final.

 

Canada’s Wheelchair Curling team has a 3-0 record at the 2022 Winter Paralympic Games in Beijing. Mark Ideson, Ina Forrest, Jon Thurston and Manitoban Dennis Thiessen defeated Latvia 10-3. Canadian athletes have won six medals in Beijing including one gold, one silver and four bronze.
