What started off as a challenge to his classmates, turned into a 'fun'-draiser for the Killarney Foundation!

In preparation for his 1976 grad class reunion this summer, Killarney resident and business owner, David Jones, put the challenge out to his fellow graduates to let their hair grow until reunion day.  This was back in March, but it 'grew' into something more of a 'hair-raising' experience by the time the Killarney Foundation golf tournament came up in August.

Jones is a board member on the Killarney Foundation and strives to promote the Foundation and bring awareness to the work they do in the community.

He says the decision to recreate his 1976 hairstyle and stop the summer trim was supposed to end with the grad reunion in July.  But as that day got closer, he was getting more and more comments from friends, family and neighbors about his lengthening locks, "and it was getting more and more annoying," he adds, "so about that time I told them I'd keep growing my hair (and increase my frustration level) if you're interested in donating to the Killarney Foundation."

So, for every $100 donation, Jones pledged to let his hair grow another week, and he would match that donation.  When folks looked at him kinda' sideways, he'd explain that his new ragamuffin' 'do' was a promotion for the local Foundation.

Single-handedly Jones raised $3,000 and then matched it for an additional $3,000.  It was at the August golf tournament when the hat was passed around to raise more money if he would surrender to the razer. The additional $1500 raised that very day secured the decision to go bald, and Jones succumbed to the shaver!

This is what community leadership is all about - leading by example!.  Perhaps the community of Killarney can use Jones' bald head to initiate a touque-drive as we get closer to the cooler temps of Fall!
