Residents of Rivers will be boiling their water for several months.

The town of Rivers is under a boil water advisory until a new water treatment plant is constructed.

Mayor for Riverdale Municipality Todd Gill says it could be another 12 months before the advisory can be lifted.

He adds their existing treatment plant doesn't have the ability to meet all the microbial water standards.

Gill says plans are in place to built a new facility but until then, residents will be under the advisory.

Local officials hope construction can start this fall.

The municipality will hold a public hearing at the Riverdale Community Centre on May 28 to discuss the proposal for the new plant.

Total cost is estimated at $6 million and would be split between the municipality and the Manitoba Water Services Board.
