Derek Barron of Lakewood, Washington is the 2019 Players Cup champion.

Barron fired an even-par 72 in very gusty conditions Sunday at the Southwood Golf & Country Club in Winnipeg and finished the 72-hole Mackenzie Tour-PGA TOUR Canada event at 14-under-par 274.

Kyler Dunkle of Arizona and Ryan Snouffer of New Jersey were one shot back.

Barron was presented with the first place cheque worth $36,000.

Third round leader Brad Miller of Maryland was 43 on the back nine which included a triple bogey eight on the par five 16th hole. He was 10-over par 82 Sunday and finished in a tie for 30th place.

Friday’s second round featured a pair aces and a course record.

Wesley McClain of Dallas made a one on the par three 2nd hole and Daniel Stringfellow of Birmingham had a hole-in-one on the par three 17th hole.

Will Gordon of North Carolina shot a blistering 11-under par 61 Friday.

Gordon, who finished in a tie for fourth place, had 13 birdies, two bogeys and three pars on his scorecard.

All six Manitobans missed the cut which was minus three.

Devon Schade of Beausejour and Travis Fredborg of Selkirk were plus two; Bret Thompson of Winnipeg was plus four; Austin Dobrescu of Brandon was plus nine, Josh Neufeld of Altona was plus 10 and Derick Goodwin of Winnipeg was plus 19.

The Players Cup, formerly know as the Manitoba Open, celebrated it’s 100th anniversary.

The Southwood Golf & Country Club celebrated it’s 125th anniversary and will host the Players Cup next year.

2020 will be the final year of Southwood’s three-year run as the host course for the Mackenzie Tour event.
