The Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games wrapped up Saturday evening in Steinbach.

The Westman team finished sixth in the medal standings bringing home 34 medals, including 8 gold.

"We were kind of normal," said Carly Hayward, Regional Sport Development Officer. "Westman is not usually a dominant region in summer so I was happy with where we ended up."

Hayward noted the Westman athletes had a tonne of fun at the games and ended up winning the Spirit Award.

"Each region can be nominated to win the Spirit award.  It's which team captures what the games are all about.  You know you go there to compete but which region can you tell is really proud of themselves, makes themselves known and is always cheering on other teams."

Hayward explained it all started when her basketball teams started off phase one by being loud, wearing the orange team colors, bringing drums and making banners for the event.

She shared what the athletes can take away from their Summer Games experience.

"I think they took home that it doesn't matter what outcome you have.  Be proud of yourself and make sure you lay it all out on the line like it's a gold medal game and just because you didn't win one game doesn't mean you can't bounce back.  Even if you don't win a medal, you can still hold your head high and have a good time."

Meanwhile, Hayward stated Steinbach put on a great show with the volunteers of the games doing a fantastic job.

The town of Virden, along with the RMs of Pipestone, Woodsworth-Wallace and Sifton will be the host community for the 2018 Power Smart Manitoba Winter Games.
