Tyson Draper scored his second goal of the game shorthanded with 2:49 remaining in the third period to lift the Virden Oil Capitals past the Portage Terriers 5-4 Tuesday night at Stride Place. Maxx Hamelin, Jeremy Warkentine and Jaxson Fillion also scored for the Oil Capitals. Austin Kindrat got the start in net for Virden and stopped eight out of 10 shots he faced. Connor Rapley played the final 30 minutes and made six saves. The Oil Capitals play their third of five pre-season games Friday night on the road against the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League's Estevan Bruins. 


Adam Lowry is the new captain of the Winnipeg Jets. The 30-year-old centre has played 621 NHL games, collecting 93 goals and 111 assists. He has nine goals and nine assists in 44 career playoff games. Lowry was selected by Winnipeg in the third round (67th overall) of the 2011 NHL Draft. The Jets play their first of six pre-season games Sunday, September 24th against the Oilers in Edmonton.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will practice today and tomorrow before leaving for Hamilton on Friday. The Blue Bombers, who are in first place in the CFL West with a 10-3 record and have clinched a playoff spot, face the Tiger-Cats at Tim Hortons Field Saturday afternoon. Winnipeg has added American wide receiver Oliver Martin to the practice roster. 


The University of Manitoba Bisons Men’s Golf Team finished the Battle of the Bear Tournament in seventh place at the Okanagan Golf Club in Kelowna. The four-person team of Cole Peters, Trent Robertson, Derek Benson and Brent Ingram ended play at plus 58, five strokes shy of sixth place Alberta. Individually Cole Peters (78-76) finished tied for 24th; Jordon McDonald (79-81) & Derek Benson (81-79) tied for 31st while Brent Ingram (83-79) & Trent Robertson (83-79) finished tied for 38th place.
