Six provincial high school varsity volleyball champions will be crowned today. The Deloraine Colts will meet Baldur/Cartwright in the quarterfinals at the A girls championship in Gretna. The Wawanesa Warriors face Glenboro in the quarterfinals at the A boys championship in Elm Creek The AA championships are in The Pas. Souris girls will meet Gabrielle Roy and Boissevain boys will take on Rosenort in the quarterfinals. At the AAA girls championship in Neepawa...Neelin lost to Beliveau in the quarterfinals. Neelin will face Transcona in the quarterfinals at the AAA boys championship in Steinbach.


Declan Vanmackelbergh had a hat trick and Brady Baron had two goals and four assists as the Deloraine/Hartney Colts doubled up on Sandy Bay 8-4 in the lone Westman High School Hockey League game. 


Southwest lost 3-2 to the Parkland Rangers in Dauphin. Kelby Diehl and Sebastian Stone scored for the Cougars who led 2-1 after the second period. Cole Temple scored in overtime to lift the Brandon Wheat Kings past the Winnipeg Bruins 4-3 and the Pembina Valley Hawks edged the Interlake Lightning 2-1 in a shootout.


Virden dropped a 7-2 decision to the MJHL East Division leading Steinbach Pistons at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. Joey Bielik and Josh Lehto did the goal scoring for the Oil Capitals who trailed 2-0 and 6-1 at the period breaks.


14 teams took to the ice Friday night in the Tiger Hills Hockey League. Isaac Friesen had a goal and four assists as the Killarney Shamrocks beat Melita 6-2; Brad Bowles, Dustin Fisher and Taylor Sanheim scored two goals each as the Miniota/Elkhorn C-Hawks downed Souris 10-4; Shane Jury potted the shootout winner as the Minnedosa Bombers shaded Deloraine 2-1 in a shootout; Jory Geddes had three goals and four assists as the Gladstone Lakers doubled up on Carberry 8-4; Jaxon Heeney scored twice as the Rivers Jets bounced Cartwright 10-3; Jaeger Lapointe had a four goals and an assist as the Neepawa Farmers beat MacGregor 10-2 and Josh Sylvester scored in overtime to lift the Wawanesa Jets past Pilot Mound 4-3.


Brandon defeated the Prince Albert Raiders 5-4 at Westoba Place in general manager Marty Murray’s debut behind the Wheat Kings bench. Murray took over the head coaching duties on Monday after Don MacGillivray was let go. Winnipeg lost 4-3 to the Swift Current Broncos. Carson Lambos, Owen Pederson and Matthew Savoie did the goal scoring for the Ice and Conor Geekie had a pair of assists.


Pierre-Luc Dubois scored the lone Jets goal in Winnipeg’s 4-1 loss to Columbus at Canada Life Centre. Former Jet Patrik Laine, who returned to the Blue Jackets lineup after missing seven games with an ankle injury scored twice for the Blue Jackets. Johnny Gaudreau had three assists.


Jennifer Jones will meet Clancy Grandy of Vancouver and Nancy Martin of Saskatoon will face Penny Barker of Moose Jaw in the women’s A event qualifiers at the DEKALB Superspiel in Morris. Matt Dunstone will take on Ryan Wiebe in one of the two men’s A event qualifiers.
