The Virden Oil Capitals are one win away from advancing to the Manitoba Junior Hockey League semifinals. Braeden Fischer scored 39 seconds into overtime to lift Virden past the Wolverines 5-4 Thursday night in Waywayseecappo. Colin Cook had a pair of goals in regulation for the Oil Capitals who lead the best-of-seven opening round series three games to none. Game four goes Saturday at Tundra Oil & Gas Place.


The Winnipeg Jets dropped a 7-3 decision to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Blake Wheeler, Paul Stastny and Nikolaj Ehlers did the goal scoring for the Jets. Toronto forward Auston Matthews scored into an empty net with 2:06 left in the third. Matthews is the fourth player in Leafs history to score 50 goals in a season joining Rick Vaive, Garry Leeman and Dave Andreychuk.


Manitoba champions Jordon McDonald, Reece Hamm, Elias Huminicki and Alexandre Fontaine will play for bronze at the 2022 Canadian Junior Curling Championships in Stratford, Ontario. Team McDonald gave up a steal of one in the 10th end and lost 5-4 to Johnson Tao of Alberta in the semifinals. McDonald will face Daymond Bernath of Saskatchewan in the bronze medal game. McDonald finished the round robin with a 7-1 record. The three other Manitoba teams failed to qualify for the playoffs. Aaron Van Rysell was 1-7; Tansy Tober was 5-3 and Morgan Maguet was 1-7.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have added Jason Hogan to the coaching staff as the running backs coach for 2022. Hogan replaces Pete Costanza who left to join the Toronto Argonauts. Hogan recently served as the assistant offensive co-ordinator, running backs and wide receiver coach with the University of Montreal Carabins after originally joining the staff in 2018 as quarterbacks coach.
