The grade 9-11 high school students at Lakeside Christian School are raising funds for their upcoming mission trip to Montreal.

Seven students and three chaperones will be travelling to Quebec in mid-April to work in downtown Montreal in a variety of ways to help the homeless and the very poor.

"We are really trying to look into our community and also look at our students and try to meet the needs of children and their growth and their spiritual development," shares principal Nancy Reimer. "And so, planning a mission trip is a really good way for the kids to learn how God works in our world and in their lives, and also build teamwork and experiences that come out of the whole preparation, and delivery and then coming back.  It can be a life changing thing for these kids."

One of LCS's teachers heard a presentation from a pastor in Montral speaking at Turtle Mountain Bible Camp this past summer.  That started the ball rolling and soon students and staff were planning their trip to Montreal with Missions Canada and Welcome Home Mission.

To prepare for the trip Reimer says they've been meeting with the mission team on a weekly basis, "and we spend a lot of time just talking about differences in culture and how God has created each one of us to be unique and different, but also that here in Manitoba in our rural area, we live a different life than the people in a downtown city."

Reimer says the students work together very well, this being a true strength to the team travelling east.

"We have a really solid community in our school and in the high school class. They really have a sense of care and love for each other and so this is just a very natural outpouring of who these kids are and so it is wonderful to be able to facilitate that as a teacher and a principal, to have the kids be able to not be scared of being vulnerable."

"So, to be able to develop that and take that into a new setting is a very maturing piece for them. It is something that these parents want their kids to experience. We want to be able to give them that opportunity.  We're really excited about this mission trip!"

Fundraising efforts have already started for the trip, with soup & pie fundraisers - with the next one taking place this Sunday morning at the Killarney Mennonite Church on Bay Avenue Church.  "People are more than welcome to join us at 12:00 noon this Sunday!"

In addition, LCS is collecting items to be sold on Killarney Buy & Sell.  As well, Value Village has a fundraising initiative where they pay out cash per pound on items donated.  The school is hoping to fill a trailer with items that can be donated to Value Village now during the spring season.

Of course, the school welcomes all monetary donations for the April 11-18th.  "In addition to supporting us this way we ask for prayer," adds Reimer.  "If people could pray for our students, our team, and that they will be able to see God working and that they would grow a deeper relationship with Him."
