75 years... three quarters of a century.... more than seven decades... however you want to describe it... that’s a very long time. Today we are celebrating 75 years in the best of ways as John and Ruth Schroeder from Morris celebrate

John and Ruth Schroeder on their wedding day April 7th, 1945 their 75th wedding anniversary! April 7th, 1945 was their big day, and for many of us that was more than a lifetime ago... perhaps nearly two!

They were married in the midst of World War II, and era that seems long ago for many, but is fresh in the mind of Ruth. At 98 years young, and her husband John at 101 years old, the couple has been living in Morris for decades. For the last few years John has called lived at the local personal care home, while Ruth remains in their home as spry as ever.

Today, on their 75th wedding anniversary, we want all of Southern Manitoba to celebrate the couple who are truly an inspiration to those of us who are maybe still working toward their 10th, 20th, or 30th.

That’s why Morning Show Co-Host Chris Sumner gave Ruth a call to talk about their amazing accomplishment, and of course, find out how it all began. When and how did they first meet... The Hudson’s Bay store in downtown Winnipeg!

And by the way, that greenhouse Ruth mentioned... her and John worked together there for 35 years! When Chris spoke with Ruth, he also asked her what’s most special about today for her.

With three-quarters of a century of marriage experience in their books, I wanted to know what advice Ruth had for the couples just beginning their lives together. We’ll get to that in a little bit, but first let’s continue the conversation with Ruth with her talking about what Mom’s love talking about the most... their kids, grand-kids and great-grand-kids.

During a time when we all need something uplifting, we can’t think of a much better example than John and Ruth who have made it work, through the ups and downs, for more than seven decades.

John and Ruth enjoying coffee and a treat this past OctoberWe want to take a moment to thank Ruth and John’s daughter Susan for sharing how special this day was, and giving us the opportunity to bring all of Southern Manitoba into our radio party for them. It’s moments like these, during a time like we’re living in, that give us the hope we all need that tomorrow will come, and it will be okay.
