During the summer months, the Killarney-Turtle Mountain Arts Council received an $18,000 provincial grant through the Arts, Culture and Sport in Community Fund, and they're using that granting to fund a study on how to improve the accessibility for folks to participate in workshops and events held in the arts centre's upper level.

"We're in the stages of going into a bit of a study of figuring out what would need to be done in order to get people and materials upstairs, because that's where our main classes are," explains Arts Administrator, Giselle Beaupre.

"Awhile back we looked into an expansion but that is a much bigger project, so we downsized that idea into figuring out just how to become more accessible.  We have received the dollars from the Province to find that information, do the networking to see what, when, if and how, this could be done, because sadly many can't get up those stairs with their art supplies or enjoy an art class or the camaraderie of other people for carving, or painting, or whatever the workshop might be."

"So, we're going to really look hard at how we can fix that."

Beaupre says the funds will also go towards making the lower level more accessible to wheelchair users, but yet in keeping with the aesthetics of a heritage house.
