Precision Land Solutions hosted meetings this week in southern Manitoba to share the importance of water management.

Guest speakers talked about the importance of surface and subsoil water management, as well as the logistics and results of drain tiling.

When installing drain tile, the municipality and Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship must approve plans for land before going ahead.

Part of this approval looks at where the water will be running downstream. Jason Fraser with Precision Land Solutions explains downstream run-off isn't as big of a concern as you might think.

"When you get a rain, it takes time for your soil to absorb the water and for it to work down. So then by the time the tile starts running, the surface water has already ran off and ran down the ditch. Then most of the ditches are already cleared out and are drained and ready to accept tile water, so it really delays it," Fraser says, "so there aren't to many concerns around the downstream."

And because the tile also acts as a filter for the water, Fraser says this has environmental benefits, as it can prevent fertilizers and chemicals on the field from leaking into the ditches.
