Combines and community gear up for another harvest day celebration - Killarney Foodgrains Grow Project
Timely rains and warm temperatures have made for the perfect growing conditions for our crops in southwest Manitoba. The Killarney Foodgrains Grow Project northeast of Killarney is also looking pretty healthy – and harvest isn’t that far away. "Once we get closer to harvest date then we will be contacting people that have helped us in the past and also some of the local people in that area where the field is," says Field manager Myron Peters, "and we welcome as many combines as we can get out there. Our record has been 26 and I've got no problem at all blowing that record out of the sky!” Peters says seeing the harvesters come onto the field is always fun to see, and it will be no different for this year's crop of wheat on the 145-acre field northeast of Killarney. "You get a group of people out there like that with one purpose, one goal and everybody is smiling," says Peters. "If you've never been out to one of our harvest days, I highly encourage you to come out and check it out. It is something to behold." Peters, says that day of harvest is a true testament to the community where hundreds join together for a special celebration meal - each year put on by the local Hutterite colonies. "You talked about community! The Hutterite colonies, the Wellwood colony and Cartwright colony, they help us with the catering every year and they have given us their word that as long as this project continues, they will help us out. You couldn't ask for better caterers. The food is absolutely fantastic and yeah, it's just one of those things that we're very blessed to have," he shares. The Killarney Foodgrains committee has seen up to 350 at their harvest day celebration and encourage everyone from the neighboring towns and villages to join them. "Come and enjoy some food out there with us. Enjoy the harvest. It usually doesn't take more than an hour to get the field off, but it again is a sight to see," adds Peters. "And even the response we get on YouTube with our videos that we have aired on the harvest every year. It's just an awesome response!" "People can sponsor an acre for the input costs at $250 an acre. A lot of people do it in remembrance of a loved one. Or they get together as a family and sponsor an acre," adds Peters. "Contact anyone of our committee members if you'd like to hear more about donating to this project." Donations can be mailed to: Killarney Grow Project, Box 1660 Killarney, ROK 1GO.
