Manitoba adds 3,397 health-care workers, moves forward with Victoria Hospital ER project
Manitoba Government Adds 3,397 Net New Health-Care Workers in Two Years: Premier News Release - October 3, 2025 The Manitoba government is moving forward on its commitment to build a new emergency department at the Victoria Hospital in south Winnipeg, with a tender set to be awarded next month and construction starting in the new year, Premier Wab Kinew and Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care Minister Uzoma Asagwara announced today. “We’re ready to restore emergency services for families in south Winnipeg,” said Kinew. “Our commitment has always been to staff up the health-care system first and then move forward with a new emergency department for Victoria Hospital. Today, two years after being given the honour of forming government, we are proud to say we’ve kept our word to Manitobans.” The premier also announced the Manitoba government has added 3,397 net new health-care workers provincewide since October 2023. This includes 285 physicians, 1,100 nurses, 1,476 health-care aides and 401 allied health professionals. Victoria Hospital has added 57 net new health-care workers over two years. "We’re seeing so many people join our health-care system because they believe in our government’s commitment to rebuild health care and listen to the front lines,” said Asagwara. “Over the past two years we’ve worked to fix the culture in health care, to put patients first and respect the people who deliver care. The job’s not done yet, but today we are celebrating the progress Manitoba has made.” The new emergency department at Victoria Hospital will replace the existing urgent care centre. It will include additional inpatient beds, additional diagnostic capacity and a high-observation unit to support acute care. Public consultations with hospital staff and south Winnipeg community members helped to inform a design that meets the needs of the growing community, the minister noted. The Manitoba government has also committed to restoring the Mature Women’s Centre, which will open alongside the emergency department. Victoria Hospital will also be the site of the new Anne Oake Family Recovery Centre, which is supported with about $5 million in provincial funding and will begin construction soon.
