Traffic heading westbound on the Portage by-pass will be re-directed through Portage la Prairie until further notice.

A truck hauling a container hit the west bridge, which has caused the overpass to be closed for the direction coming into Portage.

Ron Weatherburn of Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation explains what went on.

Weatherburn says the underpass took a fairly substantial hit and at this time the best guess is that the detour will be in place for up to a month but it could be much shorter or much longer.

He notes engineers are on site to assess the damage and over the next few days will have a better idea about what needs to be done and how long the repairs will take. No injuries have been reported at this time.

Here's how things look.
