RCMP Central Traffic Services respond to dangerous driver

On May 7, 2024, at approximately 6:00 pm, RCMP Central Traffic Services responded to a report of a dangerous driver on the Perimeter Highway near the CentrePort exit, heading north.

Multiple reports were received advising the vehicle, a grey Chevrolet Traverse SUV, was swerving, changing speeds and had nearly struck several vehicles.

As officers were responding it was reported that the suspect vehicle had struck a vehicle and fled. Officers located the suspect vehicle driving in the middle of the Perimeter Highway near Highway 9 and attempted a traffic stop, however the vehicle did not stop and almost rammed another vehicle.

As officers were attempting to stop the suspect vehicle, the suspect driver rammed one of the police vehicles several times. Officers were able to box the vehicle in and eventually got it to stop, just off the Perimeter on Henderson Highway.

The driver refused to listen to police commands and had to be removed from the vehicle. He was arrested and placed into custody.

The driver, a 57-year-old male from Winnipeg was taken to hospital with minor injuries. He is facing a charge of Refuse Drug Recognition Evaluation Demand and was released with an upcoming court date. The investigation is ongoing and further charges are anticipated.

One officer received minor injuries but did not require medical treatment.

RCMP are looking to identify any other vehicles that may have been struck by the suspect vehicle, or anyone that witnessed the incident.
