A Colorado Low is developing over the Northern Plains of the United States today, and it's going to make its presence known in Manitoba.

Brad Vrolijk with Environment Canada says that Colorada Lows "can be very  complicated systems to forecast, and often it's not very evident where exactly things will set up until pretty close to the event actually occurring." Now that the system is almost here, Vrolijk says they have a good idea what Winnipeggers, the Red River Valley, and Eastman will see.

For the City of Winnipeg and much of the Red River Valley, five centimetres of snow is expected during the day. Another two to four centimetres may fall overnight. Vrolijk also says we can see some high winds with speeds around 40 to 50 km/h this afternoon. Wind gusts could hit as high as 70 or even 80 km/h.

With the high winds and temperatures falling overnight, the City of Winnipeg could also see wind chills as cold as -25.

Eastern Manitoba, meanwhile, is under a snowfall warning. 10 - 15 cm of snow is expected today for areas in the Whiteshell, R. M. of Piney, R. M. of Lac du Bonnet, and R. M. of Reynolds. Another two to four centimetres may fall overnight.

Caution if traveling south or east

"If anyone is traveling today it's important to note that this storm is going to affect North Dakota, Minnesota, and northwestern Ontario," Vrolijk says.

"Anywhere you're heading it would be wise to check for highway conditions and weather conditions anywhere along your route today."

Vrolijk also says that everybody should make sure their vehicles are prepared for winter. "It's always good to have a kit in your car in case you hit trouble."
