RCMP officials are reminding swimmers it's important to be safe and responsible while in the water.

RCMP Spokesperson Tara Seel said to increase safety in the water, parents and guardians should keep within an arm's reach of their child. Wearing a personal flotation device (PFD) is also a good way to ensure survival. Although, Seel said it is not enough to strap a PFD on your child and let them swim; parents and guardians should continue to stay nearby their kid.

Seel said it is also crucial to keep a sound mind while in the water or on a boat. She noted impaired swimming could be fatal, and the movement of waves under a boat can increase the effects of alcohol or drugs.

Seel said one last thing to remember is to never swim alone.
