The province plans to hold a major review of Manitoba’s education system in 2019 and school trustees plan to take an active part in that process.

Janice McDonald chairs the Southwest Horizon School board and she and her trustees have been busy meeting with stakeholders in the division to get feedback on local priorities moving forward.

“We met with two MLA’s who represent areas of our division and we had a good discussion with Doyle Piwniuk and Cliff Cullen. Every trustee had questions, we told them what we thought and what we want to see from the review. We hope they were listening and will take back what we had to say and we for sure will be following up.”

Many people think the province will end up with a lot fewer school boards and that has McDonald and other trustees concerned.

“We are worried because schools are our communities. So we need to get every stakeholder tog et letters of support for a small school. If we aren’t able to get local tax dollars and they end up being controlled out of Winnipeg then there is no guarantee we will get that money back.”
