It's that time of year again for cottage owners to prepare their seasonal getaways for the cold months ahead. RCMP Media Relations Officer Sean O'Keefe shares some concerns seasonal homeowners face.

"Seasonal homes are a great place to spend the time during the summer, but unfortunately it is that time of year when we have to close them down for the winter season. Unfortunately, property owners all too frequently find themselves victims of property crime when they return to the home in the spring. Seasonal homes are often left unattended over the winter, and are easily targeted by thieves for property crimes such as break and enter, theft, and vandalism. It's made all that much easier because the homes are unattended, and often in remote areas with little to no traffic. They're not often heavily populated areas, so neighbours can't really call in when it's happening. The other part of the equation there, unfortunately where we're concerned, police are often left with very little to assist them with their investigations as witnesses aren't present at the time. Evidence left behind can be affected by things like poor weather and time."

O'Keefe recommends some tips to keep in mind.

"There are lots of things you can do to secure your home. Always ensure that the home itself and any outbuildings are properly secured. If you have year-round neighbours in the area, ensure that they know when you're coming and going throughout the winter season. And that way, if they do spot an open door or a light on the inside when you're not there, they can call the police immediately. Any off-road vehicles and boats should always be secured properly, and ideally made either inoperable or immovable. And always have storage insurance in place. Portable items and valuables such as jewelry, tools, and electronics, should not be left behind. If you can move them by yourselves, take them with you. But if you are leaving these items behind, investing in a monitored security service that will alert the police immediately can go a long way in helping us. Investigators can make patrols in the area for any suspicious vehicle and to secure any evidence left behind."

He adds following these tips will help avoid a nasty surprise over the winter.
