Manitobans should have received their War Amps key tags in the mail this past week. Another year of the campaign is underway, which sees nearly thirteen thousand sets of keys returned to their owners every year. In fact, James Jordan, Safety Events Coordinator with The War Amps of Canada, says 1.5 million sets of keys have been returned over the 70+ years that the service has been around.

Jordan encourages Manitobans to attach the free tags to their key chains as soon as they receive them because they act as a safe guard for your keys.

"On The War Amps key tag there's a nine digit confidential number that's matched to your name and address. So when you attach that to your key chain...if you were to ever lose your keys, whoever finds them just has to drop them in any mail box, or they can call the toll free number of the back, and what The War Amps will do is we'll identify who the keys belong to and will deliver them (back to the owners)."

He explains that this free service was started by war amputee veterans following their return to Canada after World War II.

Jordan adds the key tag service is free of charge and he feels that it is even more valuable than ever with the high replacement cost for electronic key fobs.

"I know my car key costs almost three (to) four hundred dollars to replace so, the service has even more value these days. A lot of people who would otherwise have to pay out of their pocket a couple of hundred dollars are pretty relieved to receive their keys back in the mail after they lose them."

Jordan further explains it is the people that benefit that see the value in the service and, in turn, are the ones that donate back to the organization. These donations support child, adult and war amputees across Canada.
