A storm on Saturday caused significant damage to Killarney's Shamrock Drive-In.

It appears lightening and strong winds combined to toppled almost half of the screen. The structure was supported by seven triangular wood frames grounded in cement. One of those cement supports was ripped from the ground, and the other was charred at the base as a result of lightening hit, according to owner Joanne Struss.

She says a damage assessment by their insurance company will be conducted, and once that's completed, they'll put together a plan to repair the screen.

The drive-in was forced to close earlier this year due to the high costs associated with upgrading the facility and due to the scarcity of movies being released on 35-millimetre film.

Struss says they have no plans to close the drive-in.

The Struss family has been fundraising for a digital projector and other updates for their drive-in the hope of reopening in the future.
