Things are getting busy at the International Peace Garden south of Boissevain.

Spring has arrived and workers are busy getting the plants ready for flower beds around the Peace Garden.

Connie Lagerquist is the horticulturalist at the IPG and she says conditions right now look pretty good.

“We’ve got the taste of spring going on here right now in the greenhouse. We are at the point to where I have everything moved into our second house so the cacti house is back to it original state and I’m working like crazy to get things seeded and in a couple of weeks we will have some transplanting going on.”

March 1st is the kick-off to the busy season at the greenhouse and Lagerquist says right now she has 700, one gallon containers, of Cannas sitting on the benches waiting to go outside. “As I said now I’m doing some seeding and the end of next week I’ve got some plugs coming and then we break loose and away we go.”

Lagerquist didn’t want to give too much away but she did say they will have some new designs and a few new looks she thinks people will like.

“Right now we have really nice snow cover in the formal area so I’m anticipating things are sitting nice and I don’t see a lot of deer tracks. So if there hasn’t been much browsing I’m hoping the perennials will surface the nice way they went to sleep.”

Lagerquist is always open to having volunteers help her in the greenhouse. “I have people all the way from Brandon to Minot that have called and said they can come and help when needed and the volunteers play an important role in helping me every year and I very much appreciate any help I can get.”
