A new exhibit will be opening later this month at the RCA Museum at CFB Shilo, titled, ‘Play Hard, Fight Hard: Sport and the Canadian Military’.
The travelling exhibit contains almost 300 artifacts and memorabilia exploring the relationship between sport and the military since the 1880’s
Museum Director, Andrew Oakden, says the display showcases a variety of sports that have been an integral part of the fabric of military life over the past 140 years.
Various sports (such as baseball, boxing, cricket, polo, the program ‘Soldier On’ and more) are depicted through panels and mannequins, displaying a wide variety of uniforms, and memorabilia that goes all the way back to the turn of the 19th century.
“Certainly, soldiers have always had a big physical fitness component,” says Oakden, “and a lot of our artifacts are already connected to sports so this just enhances it.”
Oakden says they have a fairly large area to display temporary exhibits and this one pretty much fills it.
The RCA Museum is open Monday to Friday, from 10am-4pm at CFB Shilo. This temporary sports exhibit will be on display from February 18th-April 24th, 2019.
