Skateboarders and BMX riders in Souris now have a place to call their own.

The North End Skatepark held its official grand opening last Thursday, with over 100 people in attendance.

Kris Doull is the chair of the skatepark committee.

He notes they were able to raise over $130,000 in just over nine months.

"What I'm most amazed about is the show of support we had from the community," said Doull. "We had donations coming from organizations that we certainly hadn't identified when we started. We were quite surprised that just the show of support from some of the organizations - that they just kind of came out of the woodwork to help out."

Doull says the total cost of the skatepark is just over $118,000, so they will have a bit left over from the fundraising which will be donated to the North End Park.

Part of the cost of the skatepark was covered by Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries' Small Capital Program, which contributed $25,000 to the project.
