With Halloween right around the corner, the RCMP have a few safety tips for parents and residents of Manitoba.

Community Constable Dennis Redikop says parents should do their best to make sure their kids are wearing bright reflective clothing so that they can be seen by drivers while they are trick or treating. He notes having a good plan in place is also important.

"For parents, if they decide not to go with the kids, have an older brother or sister walk with the young ones and make a plan of which houses they are going to, what time they should leave, and what time they should be expecting them back just in case somebody might get lost of something might happen so at least they know when to expect the kids back."

Redikop says it is a good idea to wait until parents have had a chance to check over the candy before the kids start eating it. He notes if it looks like it has been opened before, don’t eat it.

With so many kids going door to door on Halloween, Redikop also reminds drivers to be extra cautious when traveling in residential areas.

"Kids get excited, sometimes they run across the street to another house, and we know kids like jumping and running and not looking both ways so be very aware of that in the areas where we know they are trick or treating and just assume that kids might jump out at any moment. Drive extra cautious, slow down when you see kids in the area."

Redikop adds the RCMP do their best to be very visible on Halloween evening to make sure that everyone is safe.
