A new five-plex housing unit opening in Brandon will offer stable housing to people who might otherwise be at risk of becoming homeless or who have previously been homeless, Families Minister Scott Fielding announced today.

“A stable home environment is critical for individuals who have experienced homelessness because it re-establishes their connections to the community, allowing them to access any needed supports and continue on a path to health and wellness,” said Fielding.

The new ‘Homes for the Homeless’ five-plex is located on 11th Street and is approximately 3,200 square feet.  It includes four one-bedroom units and one three-bedroom unit.  The project was designed and will be managed by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) – Westman Region, which currently provides emergency housing to more than 100 homeless individuals.

“This housing project is a win-win-win situation for the region and our clients,” said Glen Kruck, regional manager, CMHA.  “Much of the project was built through a work training and employment program for low-income individuals.  Now that it’s complete, we can provide housing to low-income and homeless individuals and families who need it.”

Much of the project was built by the Brandon Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation’s Brandon Energy Efficiency Program (BEEP).  BEEP provides carpentry training to individuals with limited work experience to help them enter the labour force.

“This five-plex is an important step forward for Brandon and the Westman region, and we are proud to welcome its first tenants,” Len Isleifson, MLA for Brandon East, said today in Brandon at the grand opening on behalf of Fielding.

The total cost of the project is approximately $630,000.  The province contributed more than $150,000 in capital funding, as well as an additional $51,000 through the Rental Housing Construction Tax Credit.  The property will also receive up to approximately $19,000 per year in rent supplement support from the province.  Funding was also provided through the Government of Canada’s Homelessness Partnering Strategy and the City of Brandon.

CMHA – Westman Region has provided programs and services in Brandon and the surrounding area for 58 years.  For more information about the organization, contact 204-573-5357.
