A support group in Southwestern Manitoba is assisting men to learn about prostate cancer.

Westman Prostate Cancer support group meets the second Monday of each month to give advice at Seniors for Seniors in Brandon.

Chair, Doug Paterson stated the percentage of prostate cancer deaths are down; however, men still need to be informed about the sickness.

"As I understand it since 1994 prostate deaths has gone down 40 percent but it's still on par with breast cancer deaths for women.  Lots of men's egos and pride won't let them discuss prostate issues, lots of guys don't even know what a prostate is.  With today's social media and excellent media coverage there really should be a higher education level for men."

Paterson noted the group also does presentations at Brandon University and provides assistance to those in the hospital.

Meanwhile, he shared what direction the group is going at their monthly meetings.

"Lately we get about 15 out and that's not nearly enough but on the other hand, I chalk it up to the power of the Internet," suggested Paterson.  "A lot of people can get advice and counselling through Youtube and other sources.  They don't really need to attend a meeting anymore.  At the end of the day that has caused us to say 'We'll still be here monthly and people can come and listen and join in and get guidance and advice."

He added men over the age of 35 should get there prostate checked every year.

Seniors for Seniors meetings will take a break this summer before resuming the second Monday of September.
