The Manitoba NDP government and opposition party and negotiating on an end to the spring session of the legislature.

However, if an agreement is hammered out, it will likely have to contain fundamental changes to how legislative sessions are scheduled.

That's according to opposition leader Brian Pallister who says there needs to be a better schedule in place that outlines when the house sits and for how long.

The legislature was supposed to wind down on June 11, however, the opposition insisted there was too much work to be done to meet that date and instead presented a motion to extend the session to the end of the year.

The NDP has said it is prepared to sit as long as it takes, however, house leader Dave Chomiak says he doubts the Tories are serious about sitting through the summer.

Pallister says both parties are working cooperatively on this issue and he's hopeful it can be resolved quickly.
