Volunteers get down to work on Thursday and start planting flowers in Souris.
The Souris Beautification group has numerous volunteers working hard to make the community look better every summer.
President Leona Perkin has been with the group for about 10 years.
“Our group works to make Souris a more beautiful place and the committee has been around for at least 20 years. We’ll have 45 volunteers heading out not just Thursday but over the next several days to work on their flower beds. We don’t all plant the same day because everyone knows where they plant and the flowers are all picked up at Sadler’s Creekside Greenhouse. Then on Monday June 14th we’ll be hanging out baskets.”
Souris-Glenwood has a budget to cover the cost of the program and Perkin says it usually runs around $4,000.
“Each year we have a certain colour theme and this year we have a lot of pinks, purples and yellows. We decide what goes into certain areas based on wildlife in the area like deer and the peacocks.”
Every year the committee gets the usual 35-40 workers and Leona Perkin expects the same support this year. She says a few new people have come out which helps.
“Our hanging baskets will be along main street and on the crescent. We have pots behind Pharmasave Drugs, by the pool and at each end of the swinging bridge and they are located throughout the town” said Leona Perkin.
