A spokesperson for Statistics Canada says while more money is given to charity each year by Canadians, there are fewer Canadians giving each year.

But Francois Page says when it comes to charitable donations, Manitoba continues to lead the way across the country in the percentage of tax filers that claim a donation. For the 2014 tax year, 24.8% of Manitobans claimed a donation, compared to the national average of 21.4%. One year earlier, 25.3% of Manitobans claimed a charitable donation when the national average was 21.9%.

"Just like last year, the number of tax filers who make charitable donations in Manitoba is the highest recorded number for the provinces," notes Page. "It's been like this for the last ten years."

Manitoba's median donation of $400 in 2014 ranked 4th among Canadian provinces and territories. Nunavut had the highest median donation of $490.
