This summer will be the first time, the public will no longer be able to spray chemical pesticides when caring for their lawn.

Lawn and Garden Journal host Duayne Friesen shared his thoughts on the new pesticide laws.

Friesen noted right now alternative weed products are more expensive and not very good quality. He said this will mean people will need to change their standards when spraying for weeds.

Meanwhile, Friesen stated lawns are looking quite good at this point.

"The lawns are pretty green," he said.  "It would be a nicer if you had a little bit warmer temperatures as far as overnight temperatures go that can hold things back.  Otherwise, daytime highs when you are in the 22 to 25 that is really nice, that is low stress for the plants.  Our days are nice and long now so the growing season is really upon us in a big way right now."

The local lawn and garden expert also said he's noticed a new greenhouse trend this season.

"Now you can stand in a greenhouse and where are a lot of the people? In the veggie section," explained Friesen.  "That's an area where there is going to be lots of growth again this year.  Putting vegetables within your garden. You know you don't have to have a vegetable garden, you can have a garden that includes flowers and vegetables.  I think we will see that more of this year and will continue because there are all kinds of vegetable items coming out that are for small spaces and containers."

Friesen added herbs are also getting more popular and are expected to grow even more in the coming years.
