Larry Maguire, Member of Parliament for Brandon–Souris, and Drew Caldwell, Minister of Municipal Government for Manitoba, announced Friday that the Brandon Daly Overpass will receive a joint commitment under the New Building Canada Fund.

The project involves the construction of a new four-lane divided overpass with improved sidewalks, a centre barrier and access for active transportation. The overpass will be constructed to accommodate Roads and Transportation Association of Canada (RTAC) vehicle weights and dimensions. The project will increase capacity, and reduce congestion resulting in improved safety and reduced travel times for both commercial traffic and passenger vehicles.

The New Building Canada Plan is the largest and longest federal infrastructure plan in Canada’s history. This unprecedented commitment will provide $53 billion over the next decade to support provincial, territorial and municipal infrastructure.

Over the next 10 years, Manitoba will benefit from approximately $1.2 billion in dedicated federal funding, including almost $467 million under the New Building Canada Fund.

Quick Facts

· The Government of Canada has selected the project for funding consideration of up to one third of eligible costs, to a maximum of $19.2 million under the New Building Canada Fund’s Provincial–Territorial Infrastructure Component–National and Regional Projects. This funding is conditional on the projects meeting applicable federal eligibility requirements with respect to the New Building Canada Fund and the signing of contribution agreements.

· The Province of Manitoba will be responsible for all remaining costs of the project, which has an estimated total cost of $60 million.

· Manitoba’s support for this project is drawn from its $5.5-billion, five-year plan to invest in core infrastructure including roads, bridges, clean water projects and flood protection. Independent analysis conducted by the Conference Board of Canada projects Manitoba’s plan will create 58,900 jobs, boost the province’s economy by $6.3 billion and increase exports by $5.4 billion.
