A pesky piece of shrubbery has the town of Neepawa looking at how they can support the local legion. Members of the legion have approached council, as they face sewer issues due to a tree's roots infiltrating the line. Mayor Adrian De Groot says it's a chronic issue, and they're now looking at the best way to address the issue.

"Our director of operations came up with three or four options to look at. What we're doing now is that we're looking to cost them out, to see which is the most feasible, practical and cost effective. Then we'll move forward, but we're not saying that it's going to be the town picking up the costs, or the legion. There are some structural things in that area, but if we do line burrowing those issue won't play into the actual cost."

De Groot says the town's current policy sees a $75 charge for call-outs related to water and sewer work. He says the low cost is problematic, as the rest of the cost falls on the town. However, he says this request came at a good time, as they're currently conducting a review of their procedures related to the work.

"With our new Public Utility Board application for water and sewer rates, we're actually getting out of that business. Right now the town has a policy where we only charge $75 per call-out, but it actually costs us a lot more. However, we want to see this resolved, and being a public organization they do a lot for the community. It's not like it's a business or anything like that, it's a public organization that do a lot of good work within the community and we want to help them our as well as we can."

De Groot says the options currently up for discussion include replacing the sewer line, putting a sleeve on the inside to stop the roots from infiltrating the line, and possibly removing the tree and its roots.
