Neepawa's council has decided to hold off on any decisions regarding the replacement of the Ellen Street sidewalk. The walkway was removed earlier this summer to widen the roads, leading to a petition to call for the path's replacement. Due to the widening project, it was indicated council would need to replace the sidewalk on the north side of the road. A public hearing was held where no one came forward to speak out against the issue, and council decided to move forward with the north-side work. However, shortly after the decision was made citizens on the north side of the street came forward to speak out against the idea.

Mayor Adrian de Groot says council's since met with the residents along that stretch, meeting at the site itself, to discuss the matter. He says those at the meeting indicated no clear solution, so they've decided to cancel their plans for the path's replacement.

"We basically talked about the options, had a physical look at the location, the area's elevation, and things like that on the street. Really, there was no clear consensus as to one what was the best option, to there point where some felt we should just leave it."

They've rescinded a resolution to put the sidewalk in, but de Groot says they're willing to revisit the issue in the future.

"At this point there's no indication a resolution will be put forward next meeting, that could change, but as this point there's no such indication of that."

He speculates the situation could change, as the some development takes place at the south east portion of the street.
