Municipalities in Manitoba will be deciding this month whether or not to allow cannabis to be sold in their communities.

The Province of Manitoba has laid out its plans for cannabis when it comes to who can grow it, sell it and consume it.

“The province certainly has a lot on its plate in this regard and with the July 1st deadline approaching I think they may be at least a little bit more ahead of the curve than some of the other provinces as to how much work they have done” said Carberry Mayor Stuart Olmstead.

Olmstead and the rest of Carberry’s council will look at the issue at its next regular meeting on December 12. “We certainly have to make that first decision as to whether or not we are going to confirm whether we are going to allow cannabis to be sold in a retail setting location.”

Olmstead says from there it will come down to a planning decision and any conditional uses that will be applied.

“I think the majority of municipalities will allow retail stores to set up because this type of product is going to be available through mail order so really it is going to be coming into the community one way or another so you might as well have a handle on it.

Right now Olmstead says the cannabis issue isn’t a real hot topic but he thinks as the July 1st deadline approaches to make cannabis available it will generate more discussion with area residents.
