Many are enjoying the mild temperatures by heading out onto their favorite lakes or ponds, but it's for that reason that extreme caution is needed so as not to fall through.  In two separate incidents a quad and an ice fishing shack broke through the ice on Killarney Lake on Monday.

Sargent Ed Riglin, with the Turtle Mountain RCMP says extreme caution is needed when on the ice at all times, but especially now during the mild temperatures.  Our month of December has not been cold enough for the formation of a thick layer of ice.

"We've had a warm December, so I would say the ice thickness is behind from past years," shares Sgt Riglin. "The Lifesaving Society of Manitoba has some really good charting on their website with ice thickness and safe travel.  But, everybody has to remember around our area here we have springs and water can be thinner close to shore in some places.  So, you have to be real careful."

Over the past few weeks Killarney Lake has had more vehicles driving on the surface, not to mention the many quads, snowmobiles and skaters that have taken to this big backyard playground.  With the aeration system tapered down to only 2 lines along the shoreline by the water treatment plant, and milder temperatures mixed with underground springs there is a large area of open water in that area reaching to the south side by the beach.

Once it is safe for signage to be installed those signs will be posted.  However, it is extremely important that those travelling on the lake by foot or any mode of vehicle be careful, especially once the sun is setting.  What might seem safe at the surface may not be underneath.   Remember, if you take the chance on your own safety, you also put your rescuers at risk as well.
