People of all ages are being encouraged to take out their fishing rod this summer.

National fishing week is underway and Manitoba's Sustainable Development would like to see more people trying the outdoor sport.

"The value is huge," stated Recreational fishing program manager, Katherine Ward when asked about the importance of the sport.  "Fishing in Manitoba produces $200,000,000 to Manitoba's economy every year.  From recreational to commercial fishing to other means. The value of fishing in Manitoba is huge."

Ward noted many people have already bought fishing licenses and headed out to the cottage.  Fishing programs will also be available in Winnipeg to those without cabins.

Meanwhile, she shared a few good locations to fish in Manitoba.

"Right now the Red and Assiniboine River are always a great spot, especially on the Assiniboine River the goldeye are biting," explained Ward. "On the Red River, catfish are a great catch. You can also find walleye, sauger and freshwater drum as well as a variety of other species on those rivers.  The Whiteshell and Nopiming Provincial Park are always a great spot to travel too.  If people are looking for something different try going just west of Morden and Lake Minnewasta and try catching some black crappie."

Ward reminded Manitobans to use barbless hooks when fishing in Manitoba and to check the angler's guide for any special regulations for the Provincial divisions.

She added it's important to clean up any leftover garbage and bait whenever finishing a fishing trip.
