HyLife of La Broquerie has announced plans to build a large new feed mill in Killarney. Company President Claude Vielfaure says it will be identical to their new feed mill west of Steinbach and will accommodate their growth plans.

"With our announcement last fall of the growth of our Neepawa plant, the $125 million investment in our company in the next couple of years, part of that was a feed mill in the western part of Manitoba. And so we are looking at the Killarney area to build a feed mill. We are going to hopefully start on it this spring."

Vielfaure says the mill will employ about 20 people. It will be built in the northeast corner of Killarney.

"This feed mill is going to be a 250,000 tonne-a-year feed mill so it's going to feed a lot of pigs and we already have a lot of pigs in the area."

He did not disclose the cost of the project. Vielfaure says HyLife is continuing to look at sites in western Manitoba where they may be able to build more barns this summer. He notes they want to increase hog production to the point where they can operate double shifts at the Neepawa processing plant.

HyLife has applied for a conditional use permit with the Municipality of Killarney-Turtle Mountain. Council will look at the application at its next meeting on April 19th.
