Southern Manitoba is about to get hit by a heat wave.

Terri Lang with Environment Canada says a large ridge of high pressure is starting to build over the United States and is making its way north. She notes this big ridge will build up the heat and then trap it in the lower atmosphere.

In addition, Lang says all of the low level moisture is making it feel quite humid. This is further impacted by the fact crops are right now in their full growing capacity.

Environment Canada is calling for a high of 30 degrees Wednesday. Lang says temperatures in the high 20's are forecast for the weekend.

Even though it is expected to be hot and humid, Lang says the conditions probably won't be right for severe weather. She says dynamics are needed in the atmosphere to trigger thunderstorms and under a ridge of high pressure, the air is usually quite stable. However, she says there is a chance of thunderstorms later in the day Tuesday.

Lang says the hot weather could result in some weather warnings later in the week
