Normally a full moon happens once a month and in December it falls on Christmas Day.

Local skywatcher Ken McAllister says the last Christmas Day full moon happened in 1977 and won't happen again until 2034.

"On average there's two every 59 years, a full moon that would happen on Christmas Day. The last one in 1977 was when Star WArs came out and this one is when the new Star Wars movie has come out. I don't know, is that a coincidence," laughs McAllister.

He says the full moon will be at it's largest point around 5:11 a.m. Christmas day.

McAllister adds in 2015 there were four blood moons between April and September, a blue moon in July, a few meteor showers including Perseids in August, Taurid in November and Geminid in December as well as planetary conjuctions where Venus, Jupitar (including up to four of its moons) and Mars were visible.
