$31.6 million - that's how much Manitobans saved in four years thanks to the fraud prevention efforts of Manitoba Public Insurance. Spokesperson Matt Schaubroeck says this is a great success story of the investments that MPI has made over the years. The auto-insurer investigates about 3,000 cases of insurance fraud each year.

"We continue to invest to insure that Manitobans know that fraud is not acceptable and that it's important to recognize and report fraud when it occurs."He adds reporting fraud helps to keep the system fair and rates low. "Thirty-one point six million is a significant amount and all Manitoba ratepayers have seen the benefits of that recovered money through keeping our rates affordable."

And while Fraud Prevention Month is winding down, Schaubroeck says Manitobans need to be on the look out year-round.

He goes on to say that fraud takes on many forms, adding insurance fraud impacts all Canadians.

"One estimate through the Insurance Bureau of Canada states that it costs three billion dollars year in fraud claims in Canada...(that's) a lot of money and it's important to recognize the signs of when fraud may be occurring and to report it."
