The Great Canadian Smoke Alarm Test, Power Hour takes place between 10am and 11am, Sunday November 1st.

The Manitoba Officer Of The Fire Commissioner says during this hour, it's important to make sure the smoke detectors in your home are in good working order, and if their over 10 years old, that they be replaced.

Deputy Fire Commissioner Robert Pike adds, not only do they want smoke alarms tested, but for homeowners to make sure alarms are placed in the correct parts of the home, and that there is enough alarms to keep the home safe.

Here is the list of things which should be done in your home, during the Power

1. Walk through your home to make sure you have a smoke alarm on every storey, including the basement, and outside all sleeping areas or inside bedrooms if you sleep with doors closed.
2. Check all smoke alarm expiry dates.  If it is more than 10 years old, or the year it was made cannot be identified, replace the alarm.
3. Press the Test Button on each smoke alarm.  If it sounds, it confirms power is present and circuits are operating.
4. For added protection, follow the same steps for carbon monoxide alarms.

Once your alarms have been checked, the OFC encourages people to send out a tweet that they've completed the Power Hour, which will make them eligible to receive prizes.
