2017 in the Municipality of Westlake-Gladstone was marked by a couple of significant incidents.

Mayor David Single says it started in the spring, with a flood.

"Not a really bad one," he says, "But bad enough -- over $100,000 damage. And we did get Disaster Financial Assistance to help pay for it. And then we had a (outdoor) fire in the fall. And our fire department, with ratepayers helping in different ways, managed to keep it from substantial damage. We got away pretty lucky, it was pretty well a three-day fire."

Single notes there were some significant staff changes at the municipal office, with Eileen Peters retiring as CAO, after many years, including three with the amalgamated municipality.

"She worked tirelessly to make it work," he says, "It was a lot of extra work, she was really dedicated to doing it. We've hired Cora-Lee Smith, who was our assistant (CAO), and who had previously been the CAO of Gladstone. We also hired Jordan Wildner as assistant CAO, so we're pretty good, in that respect."
