Ian Bos has travelled about 36,000 kilometres since embarking on a cross-Canada walk at the end of May. Bos, who is raising awareness and funds for palliative care programs throughout the country, left New Glasgow, Nova Scotia on May 21 and arrived in Carman August 26. The trek is in memory of Bos' late father Ted who passed away in January after a brave fight with cancer.

We caught up with Bos during his stop in Carman. He says there's been so many great examples of hospitality and kindness so far during his trek. "It's the people. I meet

people that are inspired and passionate about what they do everyday and dedicate their lives to the service of others. How can you not get inspired by that?"

As for challenges along the way, Bos says weather has been the biggest obstacle. "I had about a week of rain in Quebec."

Other Manitoba stops for Bos include MacGregor, Brandon and Virden. The walker says he's from a small community and it brings him pride to be able to represent smaller towns. "I know they work really hard to keep these programs going. To get service like this in your hometown, instead of having to go to a big city and get separated from your family, I think it means a lot to people in end of life situations."

When asked about the value of palliative care volunteers, Bos said he feels health care volunteers are some of the most humble people he's ever met. "They are heroes in our communities and I think we have to do what we can to support them, and to ensure that they're there when we need them and when our families need them."

Cheryl Fraser is a member of the Carman Palliative Care Board of Directors. She met up with Bos during his Carman stop and says this walk is achieving the goal of raising more awareness for palliative care programs. "We actually have great support in Carman, but it inspires me that he's making that trek to make it recognized all over Canada. I'm hoping with his journey, it'll bring ideas to others."

Bos' goal is to raise $25,000 along the way. With the End of Life Care walk just over the halfway point, about $16,670 has already been donated. Visit the website for more information on how to donate, or follow along on Bos' Facebook page.

Bos hopes to reach Victoria, B.C. by the third week in October.
