Mennonite Church Canada is hosting its biennial national assembly this weekend in Saskatoon.

Over 500 people from across the country are attending the event.

Executive Director Willard Metzger says they heard from a couple of task forces this year.

That included a final report on how the church should respond to same-sex relationships.

"The recommendations are that we continue to hold onto our confession of faith, which identifies a traditional understanding of marriage, while at the same time, we acknowledge that after prayerful discernment, that there are congregations and individuals, after prayerful study, have come to understand marriage in a different way."

Metzger added that they didn't want to let the issue divide the church. He emphasized the need to create space for those with differing opinions.

Another task force looked at what it means to be a national family of faith in a post-Christendom context.

Metzger noted the assembly includes rich and vibrant worship, adding it's great to have delegates from across the country come together in one location.
