People get busy during the Christmas and holiday season and we are being reminded to think safety.

Troy Lamerz is a Fire Inspector with Brandon Fire and Emergency Services. He points out the kitchen is quite often a part of the home where it can be dangerous if people aren't careful.

"When you are cooking make sure you never leave the kitchen with a pot on the element when it is turned on. If you need to leave the kitchen for any amount of time turn off the element."

Lamerz adds people think it's okay to take off for short periods of time but it isn't. "Make sure if a pot does catch on fire you don't try to move it off the element. Simply cover the pot and turn off the element."

He reminds people not to use water to try and put any fire out in the pot just cover the pot with a lid.

People also need to take care of their Christmas Tree and make sure it has lots of water and don't have any lit candles around your tree.
