The President of Association of Manitoba Municipalities says AMM does not support the cosmetic pesticide ban that has become law in this province over the last couple of years.

Chris Goertzen of Steinbach says AMM remains consistent with its position.

"We don't think the cosmetic pesticide ban is useful and practical and what it does is it ends up creating a scenario where there is increased costs, dramatically increased costs for municipalities," says Goertzen. "And there's different standards that people start to apply to their own properties."

The ban was mandated by the former N-D-P government in 2015 and it requires lawn care companies and municipalities to use eco-friendly products for weed control.

Goertzen notes people want to see less pesticide, herbicide and chemical use in our communities. Yet he says there must be a sense of practicality. Goertzen explains if there are no alternatives and we must settle for cities and communities that are not as beautiful and if invasive species start to become prevalent, then it becomes a real concern.

Manitoba Sustainable Development Minister Cathy Cox says the government will be reviewing the province's cosmetic herbicides ban to ensure it is in the best interests of Manitobans and intends to meet with stakeholders to discuss their concerns.
