Over two thousand bags of garbage was collected off Manitoba roadways last weekend as part of an effort by the province's 4-H clubs and the 29th annual highway cleanup program.

The event, which is a long standing partnership with Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation, serves as a fund raiser and usually brings in around $12,000. Dawn Krinkle is with the Manitoba 4-H Council and says the cleanup allows young members to gain a better understanding of keeping ditches clean and the environmental benefits of doing so.

"One little boy had said that he thinks everyone should pick a mile of highway (to look after) and they would never litter again."

She goes on to say crews tend to find some pretty interesting items during the annual cleanup.

Krinkle extends a few 'thank yous' to the public on behalf of the local clubs. "From the Hollan Achievers, thank you to a gentleman who pulled over on the highway at three different groups and gave them each twenty dollars, requesting that the kids be taken for ice cream.

Also in the MacGregor area, a young couple pulled over and gave all the cleaners popsicles."
